It really warmed my heart to see so many families with kids at the Oakland march. It was doubly cool to see all the signs they made (my kids included!).

I think my favorite moment during the march was listening to the man behind me very matter of factly explaining to his 7- or 8-year-old son that they were marching because a lot of people discriminate against women just because they’re women and one of those people is our new president and it’s important to speak out…

He also made this terrifying statement: “We’re going to hold the press accountable.” That’s the direct opposite of how things work in a free nation, asshole.

We have a yuge entitlement problem in education right now. NCLB and charters ruined functioning schools in areas of poverty, and widened gap of service. Public schools pulled their weight, even with massive cuts in funding, but the vilification of schools in poverty areas has done irreparable damage.

My dad and I built a car from the kit. All stock. Looked great and everything. Then I got fucking annihilated at the derby. One of my first lessons that there are some things in this life you will not succeed at.

Seriously. I remember zero enforcement of weight requirements and my own neurotic father’s disdain when they let cars heavier than mine compete. My dad is a Ph.D. chemist and brought home some idiotic scale. We measured weight to some nanogram of the requirement only to be destroyed by the cheaters.

RE: weight - The boys pick the shape/form/style of the car. If they want a bus, they get a bus. If they want a wedge they get a wedge. If it’s a bus or a boat, there won’t be much weight to add.
