No youre missing the point. Which is - you cant reliably or objectively ascertain what is respectful and what isnt. Do you know the mind of the person who puts on the costume? No. The person who made the constume? No. Each person of said “appropriated” culture who might see the costume? No.

I hate people who use the term cultural appropriation. There is no such thing. A culture should be celebrated, it is the way the world views the people of a certain area. @kimigaunkoda: Considering the most hardcore otaku wouldn't consider it a good "dub" if they didn't end their sentances in "desu" and "masu" and say "ee?" and "bikkurishita!" when surprised, I don't know how to answer that in a convincing way. I can only speak from my non-purist position.
