I used to work at our local Wal-Mart in sporting goods while I was in college and encountered no end of racist shitbags from Michigan. I live in middle TN and it more than a few were pretty open while buying ammo or fishing stuff that they moved down here to get away from “those people.”

Yup. I was a kid in the 80's and we were still basically taught “communism bad and it wants to bomb us,” and that was about as nuanced as it got. There’s a lot wrong with the boomer generation of course but you can’t ignore decades of pretty basic propaganda in the US.
