You’d first have to show that ex-players kill themselves at higher rates than other men of the same age/socioeconomic status/etc., and even then, it would be misguided to say “...and it’s CTE.” as if that’s a fact.

There is really no basis for that assumption, though. If CTE never existed, some football players would still commit suicide. That doesn’t mean he didn’t have brain damage related to playing football, but without more information, we have no clue.
