On this budget, and with the desire for some reliability, I’d suggest a Gen 1 or Gen 3 Toyota MR2. Nice examples are available in this price range, and by all accounts they’re fun to drive.

I’ve been teaching people to drive stick in 4-lo. They aren’t going over 30, but can still get up to 6th. As a bonus, they learn the basics of off-roading.

I’ve lived in Portland for 9 years, and I’ve been out at these protests more than a handful of times. Donald Trump fucked up when he sent his goons here. A week ago, protests were winding down, and the “hardcore” element of protestors was mostly seen as a nuisance.

Jeeps are nice, but they tend to be overpriced and unreliable (especially used). If you want something reliable that will will retain its value, I’d put the Toyota Tacoma and 4Runner at the top of the list.
