She shouldn’t have to respond to this. It’s very likely she had zero awareness of the organization’s racist past when this happened (twenty goddamn years ago); she shouldn’t have to apologize for something she had no knowledge of.

Oh man, you didn’t check in to see how this insane stretch of a nothing-burger was getting roasted over at The Root? Cause it’s getting no traction there, and it feels like their readership should know.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that someone who was crowned “most fuckable of her barely legal peers” by a bunch of old men was probably not thinking hard about any of the implications involved.
“At that age [19], teenagers are mature enough to know what they’re being part of.”
So she entered a pageant and/or attended some weird debutante event. Is there any indication that she was aware it had a racist history? It may be hard for some on here to believe, but googling the damn thing wasn’t an option in 1999.
It’s not *quite* accusing someone of Nazi sympathies because they once owned a VW Beetle made in the ‘70s, but it’s only a step or two removed from it.
I don’t know much about her, and the whole “ball” thing is ick but if I were outed and lambasted for every stupid thing I did as a 19yr old... well.... Also as a 19yr old student still very much under the parentals thumb, I pretty much did what I was told to do, so...
We really doing this? Really? I mean we have Texas trying to take away the right to vote for anyone that isn’t white, actually seasons their food and can clap on the 2 & 4 and this is what you’re concerned with? I am all for multi-tasking but I am also for priorities and this ain’t it. Unless you have footage of her…
It also says that this was a racist thing until the early 90’s (and then wasn’t?). So given that she’s 41 now, unless she was tuned into kkk goings on in her pre-teen years and was crowned kkk princess of St Louis while a freshman at Princeton at the age of 13 (possible) it doesn’t seem like there’s much here to link…
There’s really not much of anything here. The headline and the beginning of the story made it sound like Erin from The Office was burning crosses and shit. Nope, she attended some corny debutante ball thing that has a racist past. Most of the US has a racist past.
Look, if we start doing “Famous person took part in institution that turned out to be hella racist” takes we’re going to be here forever because, spoiler alert, most white institutions in America are hella racist.
Am I missing something? I see no connection other than the origins of the festival or party or whatever that would tie her to KKK leanings. If dumbass Black people wanted to join that bullshit, that’s of course their choice but I don’t see where she was personally connected to the KKK or even racism. I also think it’s…
Guys. He’s a troll. The only satisfaction they get is from seeing the number of angry replies they can get. If you really don’t like them, then ignore them. Don’t respond - you’re giving them what they’re looking for, and I guarantee you aren't getting anything out of it.
Imagine thinking you’re superior in any way to a writer when you spell the state “Kanasas”
Why would (at latest count) 8 people like this? That’s somehow even more sad than the post itself.
doesnt seem too bad honestly. I doubt he’d like to switch with me
Imagine if we were you and our life was so sad we would attack a blogger for doing his job.
wow you sound like a complete mess
I get to write about video games for a living, have cheap rent (thanks Kansas!) but also have fast internet because I live near Kansas City.
I don’t really get this take at all.
