It wasn’t that different in the ‘70s. Ordering your car might have been a bit more common but dealers carried plenty of inventory back then. As teenagers in the early ‘70s a friend and I used to cruise the car lots on Sundays when they were closed and there were always plenty of new cars.

Color options, maybe, but just splashes of color on a few surfaces. You get the same black dash, steering wheel, console, seat base, carpet, and all but a patch of color on the doors. Just like a 2013 Mustang I had (saddle leather interior) or my 2016 Miata (tan interior).
