Gillian Anderson is good at hamming it up (in a delightful way) to play it evil when called for.

Yeah, I used to work with a woman whose last name was Folger, related to the Folger’s coffee family (without any of the money from them). She wouldn’t be totally prohibited from starting a business with Folger in the name. But her options would definitely have severe limitations.

My mother’s cousin did the same exact thing when her mother had a stroke. Racked up about $10k. My great-aunt ended up not dying right after that though and it was all discovered. You should actually read the last journal article. It has a lot to say about how severely misinterpreted the laws about women’s property are and completely undermines your point.

So by very wealthy and influential you meant “not totally poor”? And all the other women you assumed couldn’t possibly be published at the time without help from the men?

There were dozens of women novelists in the 18th century and the vast majority didn’t come from wealthy, connected families. The new form of writing was very much women’s work until men took over and made it serious business. You shouldn’t just assume everything was men’s work until the 20th century.
