I agree with you that hatches and wagons have not typically sold well in the states. I remember how pissed I would get every time I saw an Aveo or Fiesta sedan with their tiny trunklets and nasty looks. The thing is nowadays you don’t see tiny sedans as much. Yeah but the old 6 was fugly and had no real appeal. This one is beautiful and gets excellent gas mileage.
You know, I think that is one of those chicken and the egg type things. I think a lot of younger buyers would be more open to wagons if the average buyer even knew it was an option or had any idea of the advantages to getting one.
Why can we still not get a Mazda 6 wagon in the states? I know this is almost entirely unrelated but it’s been bugging me lately.
Know what else they didn’t have in 1993? iPhones.
That said I’d rather have a skyactiv Mazda 5 than a speed 3.

The whole reason minivans became popular is because people didn’t want to become their parents and drive what mom and dad had: A station wagon. The next generation did the same and didn’t want a minivan so they got a SUV. Then we got crossovers. I’m hoping we complete the circle of life and return to station wagons…
