I’m honestly astounded that you made it to 2007 before the concept of serialized fiction dawned on you.  That’s pretty remarkable.  It’s actually been around for quite a long time!

I don’t want to read a dozen books or watch a dozen other films just so I know what the hell is going on.

I mean...so? You were watching the 5th film in a series of films where the story builds on itself much like the books. Why would they make any effort to make them “freestanding” when the books weren’t that way and there was no need to and who the hell just jumps into the fifth one in a series and then complains that

Or, you can let people enjoy things.  If comics aren’t your thing, that’s fine, but there’s zero need to go poop on someone else’s rainbow.

How amazingly reductive of other people’s human experiences that was. “If you are a comics fan, you are an awful person and never get laid”.

This really has never been true. The MCU rewards you if you’ve seen it all and really rewards you if you’ve seen it multiple times.

counterpoint, you SHOULD know what happened in the first season if you want to follow the second season

You’re just saying that because it’s supported by facts.

After everything, Britney Spears is reportedly considering reconciling with her dad, Jamie Spears. You know, the one who put her in a conservatorship in the first place. Whatever our queen wants, I will support her, I guess. [TMZ]

Danny McBride is the best character by far.

Hopefully she can lay off the weed for a couple days next time the Olympics roll around

I don’t say this lightly, but this is a dreadful, dehumanizing take.

“Hmmm, if i compare the movie I hate with something everyone else seems to hate right now they will ALL see the error of their ways!” - Germain, probably.

I will never understand what people’s problem is with a movie pitched firmly at five year olds doing well at the box office. Having sat through a great many movies meant for that age range, the Mario movie was basically Citizen Kane for kindergarteners.

I’ve been Black for several decades, so I’m not saying you’re wrong, but... I’m just not sure this point is as salient or revelatory as you think it is.

Yes, it does.  If you write for the AV Club... or Jezebel... or the Root... or Gizmodo...

“...which caused controversy after film’s the first trailer dropped...

Do people whining on Twitter mean controversy is caused?

I’m a big advocate of keeping biological men out of women’s sports, but chess is not my idea of a sport. You can play chess in a fucking wheelchair. I don’t understand why you would even need separate men’s and women’s chess leagues.

But I think only part of its success was due to being a woman-directed movie about the evils of the patriarchy and what not. It was also a very funny movie about a popular toy, just like The Lego Movie. Can there be crappy toy movies? Sure. But there can also be funny movies about toys whether or not they have a
