Arguing with strangers in the comments section of freaking AV Club articles is never a "public service." It's just sad people doing something sad in order to feel marginally less sad and more important.

I never hypocritically insulted 4channers for being time wasters. In fact, I'd argue trolling Shia LaBeouf and his dumb art exhibition is a far greater public service than either writing or commenting on them on AV Club.
