This a million times. Deaf people shouldn’t have to alert the rest of the public that they are about to arrive and to be prepared. Deaf people are just trying to live their lives like everyone else. Public spaces should be prepared for large numbers of deaf (or other disabled) patrons because THEY EXIST.

This totally made me cry at work. A lot of progressives complain vocally about Trump’s anti-LGBT and anti-Muslim and racism stances (and rightly so), but his mocking of disability often gets forgotten among vocal liberals for some reason. I’m so glad Meryl reminded people about this on a world stage.

1996 was 20 years ago, not 30 or 40. If you go back and look at published papers from around that time, you will find many that refuted ideas like ‘superpreditors’ as a psychological or sociological concept. The ‘superpreditor’ was not a scientifically valid or supported idea in 1996.

“Intellectual disability” is the term you are looking for. “Mentally retarded” is indeed a slur. Whilst it was previously a legitimate diagnostic term, it became a slur because it was repeatedly used in demeaning ways- that is why it is no longer used as a diagnostic term.
