I also work in the sector and you’re right. You can support people, guide them, make appointments, book them into detox or rehab, speak to them every day, but you can’t make them change.

My ex was a drug addict. He did some horrible things, and ultimately went to jail. I was relieved about that, because he was abusive. He got out of jail, and seemingly got his life together; he’d gotten clean, got his first steady job, met a nice girl, and then one day he had a single relapse and overdosed.
