I think the problem may have been your professor. If any field would be low in racism it would have to be the one that tries to understand everything about other cultures as well as their own.

It seems like maybe you had a terrible professor and/or classmates, and I’m sorry for that. I won’t deny that there are anthropologists throughout history who have made racist studies and obviously they need to be shut down immediately, but that doesn’t mean the entire field is worthless or not credible.

I’m not even sure this person knows what the field of Anthropology fully entails, so I don’t even know if it’s worth arguing. Like, is the study of our extinct hominin ancestors racist? Are we being disrespectful to chimpanzees when we compare their evolution to ours?

I’m sure there are books or professors that can teach anthropology in a racist way, but the study of culture and linguistics in and of itself is not racist. In fact, it’s helped document many cultures and languages from completely disappearing as well as the historical evolution.
