Sure, I noticed that. We were supposed to. Liam was always pausing to oddly gaze at something in the air, accompanied by that ominous sound effect. The question is, is it simply some figment of his delirium… or is there something legitimately supernatural going on with the story?

He's basically half crazy, irrationally thinks he's somehow culpable in Charlie's murder, and is also terrified of losing custody of his daughter. His flight from town is unnecessary, but only the audience realizes it.

Just putting his hands in there wouldn't cause his fingernail to rip on on a rib-bone. Only digging and tearing with said hands would do that.

People should consider the possibility that the mammoth corpse contains some sort of prehistoric virus or bacteria or parasite, which has infected Liam (and briefly made him a deranged killer), and now presumably will infect others… if it hasn't already.

The opposite of a spoiler, actually.
