Be sure neither of you are in any main story mission. If one of you is in a mission the game will not allow coop play. Coop works for most any other event in FC4, except main story missions.

When the helicopter starts making scary beeping noises and shaking this indicates your altitude is too high. If you continue to rise, it will stall, and you will plummet to the ground.

How about the pressure inside a burning building? Where I see this as useful is firefighter tracking within a building to locate downed or trapped firefighters.

Indeed, but they need gyroscopes so that we can simply turn around to look behind us in game... or turn your head up or down, etc etc.
