I learned to proofread from reading the newsletters sent out by my school and seeing how many spelling/grammatical errors I could find. There was always at least one.

I just got an email yesterday from someone - in response to my request that they correct (non-grammatical/spelling) errors on a blueprint - which used “effect” incorrectly. I’m sure everyone in the office could hear the subsequent face palm.
