To put it simply, if you obtain a password file (which can be obtained in a variety of ways outside of having admin credentials) then you can use this method to obtain valid credentials. Using valid credentials from that point on will make it easier to "stay under the radar."

I don't know enough about them to give a real response. In a general sense, it would allow them to cross reference hardware/software between the two to more accurately determine how they work.
