It's mostly for the technicians or doctors themselves. You see, if as a doctor you use that machine on your patients every single day about 5-6 times there's a minuscule chance that they'll get some radiation in their body and prolonged exposure etc. etc. etc.

@M-Tek: Portability, relaxing on the couch and grabbing your ipad when you want to play a quick crosspuzzle or look something up on the web when you have people over for coffee. Apps on Macs aren't even comparable to iOS. Whether you need it is up to you, but there's definitely uses for it.

@BoomSchtick: Besides the fact that one privately funded MRI would cost more than your average car, a strong enough magnet WILL do the trick. A fridge magnet obviously won't work but if you order a relatively strong magnet you shouldn't have a problem.
