Faxanadu isn’t just one of my favorite (and most underrated) NES games, it was also one I got as a Christmas present! I had picked it out beforehand - the cover, plain though it was, was mysterious and eye-catching, the screenshots on the back looked awesome, and it looked like a big, sprawling adventure in the vein

Fuck this post is stupid. Jesus.

I mean, “I don’t want to associate with this person because I find them awful,” doesn’t seem immature to me. Like, I can enjoy media and personalities that are problematic or toxic to varying degrees, but I have to take them in context. The context here is that it’s 2020, and Doug TenApel was involved, so within that

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to politics or social politics.”

might as well burn all art and media before the 1980s then

I’m sorry, but we “canceled” fucking Nazis back in 1945. My grandfather didn’t die killing those fucks so people like this asshole and you can have a “difference of opinion”. He should be punched in the face at every opportunity. As for your “both sides” comment. Your Gamergate is showing. Fuck off.

Dragon Warrior (Quest) 1 was the first JRPG I ever played; I would say Legend of Zelda 1, but that’s an ARPG. I had no idea of “grind”, but I sure learned the concept on DW 1. Grinding on that first section for awhile while bashing slimes really taught me patience :)

I cant express adequately the frustration of a young boy, playing Dragon Warrior, stuck for eternity in the first room because he didn’t know he had to open a menu to use the stairs.

I don’t know how you interpreted potential violations of labor law as not illegal, but it’s right in the above story that the company mis-classified workers as overtime exempt.

About what? That it’s not illegal to be an asshole?

Well, he’s not American, he’s Singaporean, and his crap attitude is typical of the management culture in the tech industry there more broadly. Managers at Creative are also famous for being assholes in precisely the same way. I legitimately wouldn’t be surprised if he has them on his resume- Creative has a horrid

American Capitalism actively rewards sociopathy, abusive practices, and the creation of serf classes.

It’s almost like you have to be an abusive sociopath to be a CEO in modern capitalistic societies.

I bought that bundle too. How could I resist? A game console with three highly rated games that can play Blu-Ray and support streaming services for $200. That’s basically three devices in one!

Why does it always seem like no one even mentions JRPGs or other Japanese games when the topic of console exclusives, particularly third-party exclusives, comes up?

“competition breads innovation” - Mmmmmmm, breaded innovation

This is a masterful review, Heather. Very well done. Having wrote the original IGN guide for Shenmue back in 2000 as a rookie author, and having hoped to have done a guide for Shenmue 3 had Prima Games not gone to that great library in the sky, the series holds a special place in my heart.

Very nice review, it really captures the essence of the series' experience, and will be very helpful for gamers who don't know what to expect or why Shenmue is special. I enjoyed reading this!
