OMG, who are you, Ryan Gosling? Anyway, kudos to you and your kid.

Yeah, please tell us. I think it's funny, but I probably won't if I know how it got started. So wait, don't tell me.

You are the bomb! Not only for articulating it this way, but for recognizing that childless ladies also have a need for "balance" or to do something besides work. It's always like, you can only justify not working if you have babies, and then we assume that you don't want to work hard. Well, there are other joys or

I think you are a little fixated on this question, and it's kind of reductive. Do I think she benefits from white privilege? Yes. Would you like to be any kind of Latina in Arizona right now? My guess is no.

Not the suggestion I was trying to make. And sexualization is not necessarily a benefit, especially in professional circles, where people associate Latinas with their nannies. Although being Latina is not a road paved with gold (not now, in this country), there IS plenty of privilege that comes with color, no doubt.

I agree with you! Your point is about color, not ethnicity, and it's true. The O is a pet peeve. It's important that Latinas not be white-washed. Most of us are mixed even if we can pass, so this aggro response is about identity, although I agree with your point.

ColOmbian. It's true, lighter Latinas are assimilating faster than other POC, but you know, Latinas come in all different colors and are still Latinas. Some light Latinas experience discrimination. And they also still might call you out for misspelling Colombia. As everyone else on this thread has already pointed

I agree with this comment, except I don't think it was her intent to approach it as a black/white thing only. It's true, the Columbia/Colombia thing is seen by a lot of Latinos as disrespectful. It's like how typos communicate carelessness. Just saying!

Uh-oh! Speaking of offensive. But isn't the real gripe here that there are so few shows with women of color as lead actresses? And the one that is = Carmen Miranda?

Truth! Truth! I don't even think its the best Whitney song.

I think to them being a parent means creating the perfect environment for their own inner children to thrive. I think they either over-identify with their kids' emotions and/or have difficulty coping with the stresses of daily life in a city. Oh that, and they are control freaks. Not fun for the kids, I'm sure.

Agreed. What does that say about the kind of judgment she would exercise as a parent? Our culture is so quick to criticize childless women, but this is off limits? I for one hope the state is monitoring her - for the sake of the kids.

Comment of the year! I want to print this out and post copies of it in mens rooms everywhere.

I LOVED the "skanky cheerleader" comment, that said so much about this guy. I must say, I have met many more intelligent and thoughtful people who went to liberal arts schools than I ever have from the Ivies. I really don't see how a school that tolerates (even celebrates) this kind of behavior can be a place where

I can't wait until all the "Smiths" have turned to "Lopez."

It's so wierd how much people care about JL's figure. Sure, maybe Rooney Mara would have made a good Katniss, but I don't think people would equate her slimness with malnutrition - it's more likely that people would just be like "she's hot" or not even notice because she's the same size as most of Hollywood. And JL

I bet your husband is either scared shitless of you or really really happy. Or both.

Me too. It actually feels frivolous to have a big expensive party to celebrate our commitment, which we already have, or jewlery. We would both rather spend the money on a trip or a nice piece of furniture. Plus, I feel like this way people assume I'm younger than I am, because any "normal" person my age is supposed

OMG, are you me? My mom was the same, and I don't know if it's because of that, but OCD people make me physically cringe. They seem really angry to me.

I'm sorry to tell you that actually, many white South Africans - especially those who supported Mandela and the end of apartheid - are proud to call themselves "African." I understand that a lot of Black Americans are very invested in the term "African-American," but the term "African" really means different things
