i was thinking the same about the tdi. im sure it would get better than 55. people are already breaking 50 in their jettas and close to 50 in the new passat.
the cruze eco does some smart stuff too. belly pans, a grille that opens/closes based on cooling demands, lightweight aerodynamic wheels, a lip spoiler, and a way out there 6th gear for highway cruising. and yes even a stupid upshift light so you dont rev higher than necessary.

diesel plus hybrid/e-assist and cylinder deactivation and aerodynamic improvements? i think 100mpg wouldnt be too hard to reach. since diesels run better hot, e-assist and cylinder shut down might be better than completely shutting down all cylinders.
