The Sunset Tree is the traditional start point. It's towards the beginning of his studio recorded output and it is, crucially, his first autobiographical work. It is about his childhood, the abuse he suffered at the hands of his stepdad, and how he feels about those things. It is great.

I think it's really only great because the source material is fantastic though.
