I find that even some of the early S1 HIMYM episodes tend to rely on old sitcom tropes than the "heyday" of seasons 2-3/4, myself.
Pretty sure there was an episode early in the run…within the first three seasons, I think? That said Robin never had kids, but that she enjoyed a relationship with Ted's kids (something to do with their art).

Assuming the show keeps up even a fraction of the popularity its displayed to this point, that's statistically improbable. The "13 regenerations" mythology is a hurdle to be overcome, not a reason to close shop for good.
