It has that kind of “cinematic”, tell-don’t-show writing that makes it easy to digest for people who otherwise don’t read much. Robopocalypse is another good example of the same style...coincidentally Spielberg wanted to direct that one too. They’re more like adapted screenplays than proper novels.

It’s definitely not just you. My hype level for this movie is even higher after seeing the trailer and I’m pretty disappointed that so many people seem to be disappointed.
