One very simple fix to that political system would be to allow ranked ballots and IRV-style elections, as Ireland and Maine do. It’s not a technical issue; it would be easy to implement. Attack ads would decline because candidates would have to work for the second place spot on their opponents’ supporters’ ballots.

The glaring issue with our electoral system is the one-vote-one-candidate plurality voting system. It’s really not a technical problem to issue ranked ballots and run an IRV election in the modern world. Ireland does it in their presidential races, for instance. Maine does it in their state races.
