I think there will always be a nostalgia filter to these things where the great stuff will be remembered and the terrible stuff will be forgotten. There was an insane amount of generic, terrible and forgettable anime in the 80's, 90's and 00's mixed in with all the amazing stuff and i’m sure this won’t change anytime…

Hell even characters that have the potential for clear over sexualisation do a good job of getting out of it. Tifa from FFVII could be seen as a clear sign of pandering but is able to get out of it by having a good design and interesting character.
