"We're definitely going to see Homeworld at last, right?"
Preview for the hour long episode to air on Memorial Day says YES!
It would seem that most of the more wild vampires kill their targets via exsanguination. By keeping his prey alive, the German may just be prolonging the inevitable turn.
It was to allow the, now germinated, victims from the plane, to spring forth and attack. Even though they may die when the sun moves away from the impeding moon, they'll have infected multitudes of new carriers. With ~200 coming down from the sewers, you could assume that at least another 400 were infected.
I fully disagree about Vasilliy coming across as a waste of time. It was an obvious setup to "this guy is badass." His scenes were fun, conveyed his character, and setup future scenes. That's how episodic TV works. If he came on screen and killed a mofo, you'd be rushing the plot.
