@HalLumos: Ok, you two provided my much needed "chuckle of the day"—thank you very much!
@Pwnguins: That is pretty much where we are right now. If we get to volume with similar figures, we are going to do a Hulking out activity where the students figure out their height, weight (volume), and clothing (surface area) if they were to transform into the Hulk.
@Pwnguins: Yeah, math. Mostly calculus and geometry.
@7h3gr3yf0x: Hey, I'm a high school teacher—$100 is STILL a lot! :^)
@Lord_Data: Yeah, definitely double-bag the ice cream. We did this with my cub scout den a few meetings ago.
@srwight: Aww, you beat me to it...I teach high school. I was going to LOVE all the material I could get on a slide in 9 point font!!!! ;^)
@Hagame: This was my issue. My old router died, my wife's newish laptop supported N, so I went N.
I use a Logitech Harmony (550? 590?, 5-something) to control my dvd player, theater, tv, etc.
@prospero: This. I do the same thing. I am a bit on the cheap side, and only have one tuner in my HTPC (I still use it as a separate desktop in a little corner off from the LCD). I have an HD tuner box for cable, and I run analog through the HTPC (VMC with no QAM hack yet). Also have the video games going through…
If you can get to it, change a few key words in Word's auto-correct feature on a buddy's computer. I changed a co-worker's computer to auto-correct "Mr. Moody" to "Mr. Moody is a jerk." Hilarity ensued!
@slip: Our cub scout pack uses them as walking sticks at camps. Sturdy, light-weight, and if one gets lost, we can usually scrounge up another one.
@Swimatm: I say down with metrics! We don't want no foreign rulers!
@wjglenn: I have to say, the "teach it" part can be one of most valuable parts. After 14 years of teaching math, I still find connections when I struggle with trying to explain something in a "different" way because the kids don't see the solution to a problem the way I see a solution. And I pride myself on being…
@mathmonkey: I agree on the "what math is" part. As a HS teacher, I try to strive to give my students a taste of what both pure mathematicians and applied mathematicians do (at least, from the knowledge that I have learned). I hate that so many people feel like math is something you just "memorize" and do, and they…
@Ssscorpion: Actually, I always thought it would be cool if the accent corresponded to where you were in the world. Imagine a southern drawl while driving through Georgia, or a "Fargo" accent, etc.
@DeLarge: That is one of my favorite tricks! It also works with ANY two-digit numbers with the same 10s digit and ones digits add to 10. (Sounds more complicated than it is.)
From another mathematical perspective...if you randomly choose, the odds are stacked against you if the lanes are full...
@Steve Webel: Hey, SOMEONE has to balance out the Apple fanboi postings that occur on Gizmodo...
