I agree with your sentiment, but the indentured servants weren’t even considered slaves. They entered a contract and were treated with decency and respect (well, they still had to work like a dog and put up with their boss if he was an asshole), but they didn’t have to worry about being chained, tortured, beaten.

Luckily nowadays, all you have to be is po’, and most universities (at least here in VA) will waive application/registration fees.
