I’m really picky about writing styles, so I just can’t agree with the praise the original got for it’s writing. Not the story, which was great, but the actual writing.

Yea pretty much this. The ratings system is largely there so that parents can police their offspring’s buying habits, as can any retailer who chooses to adhere to the rating guidelines voluntarily.

The Majesty series had that game device where you could choose the location of the major guilds, but houses, inns, sewers, graveyards, etc where built by the AI wherever the AI wanted them to go. They also had all the heroes control themselves and you could only really suggest what they should be doing.
