Oil - even the cheapest oil that is API certified today is better than the stuff from 10-15 years ago. Actually this applies to most fluids.. Brake, PS, Washer, etc...

Bulbs - you don’t need those super expensive Long Life or hyper white tail light bulbs.

Weird, since everyone in that video seems thoroughly competent, careful, and generally intelligent. I guess this just goes to show you that freak accidents can occur to the best of us no matter how many precautions you take.

I like how you try to separate yourself from the problem. You bring the pitchfork people out this is what happens, take some responsibility. When I was a teenager and got my first car, I had no money so my dad taught me how to do all my own maintenance. I did it because I had no other choice. If my car died, I was SOL, so I learned to keep it well maintained. So well maintained, in fact, that I still have it 20 years later.
