I think gangsta rap in its initial stages alienated tons of people. Why stay in the box? I think good art should, in some ways, challenge and alienate. I might be calling this good art. Pretty close. Dear god, what is this MFA doing to me.
I get that, but I honestly think it's more about empowerment after a rough ride in her personal life. But art is art, and as a spectator, you're entitled to your criticisms.
I love this. As someone from Houston, I recognize that Bey is using the Texas 'trill rap' mixing and aesthetic conventions of the genre. It's a subtle nod to her H-town roots and combines perfectly with the theme of the song. Not a huge Bey fan, but I like her more after this.
