It’s becoming more common for one-and-dones. Briarpatch was actually promoted as a “limited series,” which typically means one season. Fargo, Big Little Lies, and The Alienist were all initially one season shows. But America is still more likely to order another season.

The article says “one of his first big starring roles,” and a “starring” role typically means the lead one, or one of the leads. He’s a great comedic actor, but he wasn’t often the lead.

Aside from the pink clouds, that opening wasn’t stop-motion, but tilt-shift photography, which makes everything look miniature due to the focus. They also tend to amp up the color saturation and contrast.
