You could also look at it the other way around. Eli Whitney invented a machine that easily made cotton into a workable material, thus creating a high demand for a crop that required a large free labor force.

Even the earliest traction engines weren’t widely around until the late 1800's. Invented, I suspect, out of necessity since there wan’t a huge free labor force around to till the fields.
