I know DRI is credited with the first blastbeat, but Charlie Benante's drumming on the first SOD record is legendary.

Celtic Frost weren't really thrash, though they're definitely the most creative 80s metal band. Coroner on the other hand, that was some next-level stuff.

I saw the accompanying tour back in 91 with Morbid Angel, Godflesh, Nocturnus, Ripping Corpse, Deceased, and one or two other bands. I'd like to think the reason metal was such a near total sausage fest then compared to the moderate majority sausage fest it is now was all the sweatpants.
