Since the last season of last year, Destiny 2's writing took a huge leap. The story was always good, but it was in between the lines, in the lore, etc. But they made some team/leadership changes and it’s really shown. The story, writing, and presentation of it it all to the player is massively improved.

This is all just conjecture based you saying Activision bailed. It is far more likely Bungie’s contract had an out, or they bought Activision out. One of the important considerations is Bungie always owned the IP. Activision never did which is not the norm for a publishing relationship.
