Legend of the Galactic Heroes, don't stomp on it for looking old. It covers meaningful topics, has some of the best pacing of anything I have ever watched, and is full of well written dialog.

Truth be told, I think Future Boy Conan by Hayao Miyazaki (his first TV series 1978) is the best. It's a beautifully, fun adventure story similar to his later Laputa (Castle in the Sky) set in a drowned Earth where very little land exists above the waves. Well worth looking for if you never heard of it.

OK i agree with 85% of most of these tv shows but no one mention one mention one of the best unfinished shows out there. Pirates of Dark Water or am i the only one who thought this show was epic and cried when it was never finished.

Legend Of The Galactic Heroes I didn't see it on TV but I did see it and it was grand best space opera in my opinion. The inspiration I got from it was great since there's not a lot of entertainment that does inspire except books of course and people like in this anime.

Wow... well, American series-wise, hands-down, it's Jonny Quest. I devoted many nights to it when it first came on TV when I was a kid- it had a look unlike anything else from Hanna-Barbera, it didn't balk at killing people, and it was action-packed.
