It is, and it works with pretty much any cheese. Additionally, it also rpevents buns to get soggy from all the sauce/meat juices.

Unsalted is an obvious better choice, because you can add some nice crunchy salt, or just plain one, but you can never unsalt.

I agree about the texture. But not everyone preffers same terxture. That is why I fry the cheese and then scoop it up with a bun. I get crunchy cheese this way :)

You could also throw a slice of cheddar or something, let it bubble and melt, then just scoop it up with that fried bread.
