Oh it’s absolutely subversive. It’s most definitely not a by-the-numbers 80s action flick. The way it plops the audience in the middle of the action, no real explanation or exposition about the characters, and the way it satirizes pretty much everything definitely isn’t conventional.

I recall LOLing in the theater during the propaganda scenes and especially when Doogie Howser shows up in a Gestapo uniform. It was definitely lost on the rest of the audience.
