I like the Rescuers, but Down Under is indeed better.  I mean George C Scott as a psychopathic poacher that really seems to enjoy messing with a kid?  Yes!

You can’t really trust the AV Club anymore on pop culture/media pre-1990 or so. That was solidified by the “Best Thanksgiving TV Episodes” article last week that had a non-Thanksgiving Office episode, yet didn’t include WKRP, Cheers, or Bob Newhart.

Playboy was a serious venue for short stories (on par with the New Yorker) even as late as the 1970s. Plus they were the only mainstream publication to print interviews with countercultural figures like Malcolm X in the 1960s. It was unquestionably a serious publication in its prime. Yes, you can certainly question

The Rescuers Down Under, a “tepid sequel”? Them’s fightin’ words.

Chadwick was a HUGE movie star from “42" on out. Absolutely iconic. That’s why his death hid so very, very hard (god, what a gut punch that news was), and one of the reasons re-casting was not an option.

Came here to say Brendan and Keanu are Canadian.

Fraser definitely did excellent drama, for example the excellent “Gods and Monsters” (at the height of his beauty), “The Quiet America” and later TV such as “Trust.”

the black cauldron is part of a very strong fantasy series that i remember loving as a kid, its kind of midway between tolkien and the darkness of moorcock. its a shame that they didnt gauge the market right with black cauldron, im hoping someone does the chronicles of prydain justice at some point.

Stupid fucking take, son.

So James Dean wasn’t a star cause he was only in three movies?

Kinda feels like everyone’s looking for the most outrageous interpretation of what (to me) boils down to “you go to see The Avengers because you wanna see Hulk and Thor fight, not because you want to see Ruffalo and Hemsworth.”

Turn of the century was definitely the heyday of Maxim/FHM. The harsh reality of launching a magazine catering to a young male demographic in the late 90's was that they were extremely online by the mid-00's. By 2006 it was not hard to find offers for a free Maxim subscriptions on the web as they attempted to boost

Well I do kind of get when people who are playing a character are a different race than the character.  But when the race, in this case Asian, don’t make a stink, and all the rage is coming from mostly white people it just seems strange.

I’m trying to remember now, but wasn’t Maxim getting a little long in the tooth by 2006? I thought their real heyday was more like 2000-2001.

That’s where I remember him from the most. I enjoyed his work there. I always appreciate working actors who turn to academia to train the next generations. John Astin, IIRC, is still teaching even now!

loved him as Conrad McMasters in Matlock

I want a series about ScarJo parachute climbing aimlessly for an hour each week. The plot doesn’t begin until she’s revealed 100% of the map.

Oh no, Sundown!!  I hate this news.

It was racist making Johnny Storm black, right?

No grappling hooks! What’s the point!
