Also, Southerner here, born and raised in North Carolina. Family has lived in the state for hundreds of years and my ancestors fought for the South. Fuck ‘em. They picked the losing side and are long dead. I feel no need to defend them now.

I don’t understand the idea that the losing side in a civil war should be honored at all. I don’t see why it matters how wealthy their ancestors were. Their side lost. They don’t get to have monuments commemorating their treason.

Well, to be fair, the Civil War was about state’s rights… the uppermost right being the right to own and buy and sell other human beings as property.
