I'm embarrassed to admit that I made it a full 17-18 years before I learned that "colored" was offensive. I never used it, because I knew it was... unfashionable, I guess is the term? I picked up on the fact that other people didn't use it, but I thought it was more akin to calling cars automobiles or something -

There were two ways of using it in the UK 'coloured people' is an out of touch but not previously offensive term but it's very close to 'coloureds' (a plural noun) which was never deemed appropriate and has always been othering. I tell my grand parents off for the latter use whereas I know they're trying when they use

It's not a generally-accepted term. It's very old-fashioned and while it may not have quite the same connotations that it does in the US, there's enough cultural exchange between the two countries to make it less acceptable than it used to be. I would certainly be surprised to hear it said by anyone under about 65.

Police Officer: Was the suspect colored?

I know it's more of a catch-all term, I suppose the semantics of placing emphasis on people is the most important bit, like calling someone black rather than a black person is a bit rude, but then I wouldn't have thought it would be rude to call someone a black actor, because that's emphasis on them being an actor,

About 10-15 years ago, I had to lecture my grandfather about how "colored" wasn't really an acceptable term for black/African-Ameican people anymore. Thing is, however, for his generation, that was considered the more progressive/polite phrasing. He apparently never used "colored" to describe people again and would

1) "People of color" is not synonymous with "black people."

It's only offensive if you say it with a Southern accent.

Not at all, it is very offensive in UK

It's certainly a no-go over here now.

No question Rihanna and Leo are totally ready to settle down together. Didn't I hear somewhere they've both been saving themselves for marriage?

I am also curious. I knew it was outdated but not necessarily offensive. We still refer to people of color - is that better because they are "people" first and "color" second? Now I feel really, really tonedeaf.

Well, you wouldn't feel much pain for a bit after consuming, certainly.

Let's do this! What would be in it?! Milk of magnesia and whiskey?

Irish Mammies ain't nothin' to fuck with.

So, wait, they can't even get their shit together for a meaningless gesture that everyone knows will be vetoed? Oh man. Oh MAN. The next two years are gonna be great.

on netflix i enjoy documentaries about prostitution and escaping cults...

I did like that touch - that her grammar and spelling were atrocious, as she raged about how important it was the Greek life prepared her for being professionally presentable.

Also,

The point is that the only women who are permitted to have sex are married middle class ones, and only for procreation, never pleasure. This because women are filthy whores sent here to tempt men. So, you and your child deserve to starve to death as punishment for opening your legs. The love of Christ in the eyes
