I think people used to take comfort in the fact that most politicians knew better than to truly believe in what they were saying. Always a bit of a grain of salt. Trump says it and then re-adjusts his worldview to re-assure himself it is true.

That is just so so depressing. Cults of personality are terrifying. At this point the Trumpistas have all doubled down too much to admit that maybe they backed the wrong horse.
