Mate, you’re in Jalopnik now.

Your username satisfies me on a deep and spiritual level.
Quick, but Commodores don’t corner; they have so much torque, and such little traction, that you need to wait forever to get the power on out of corners. Traction control on them is terrible, too.
Very good point - I was ignoring the role of target acquisition, an area in which the US Navy has a clear advantage.
Fair point; I was accounting only for raw ship-to-ship firepower, and was ignoring the carrier’s air wing. That said, the S-300FM missiles on the Kirov (which have greater range than a Harpoon) would make the F/A-18s’ life very unpleasant.
The ship-to-ship ordnance on a Kirov outguns the two cruisers and two destroyers by an order of magnitude. A single Shipwreck will pulverise any ship in US inventory, moves fast enough to be a huge challenge for CIWS, and this thing carries twenty of them; they can all be launched simultaneously, too.
The Kirov outranges and outguns everything in NATO. A full salvo would wipe out an entire carrier group in seconds. Of course, the retaliatory strike by the carrier’s already-launched fighters would sink the Kirov, but that’s a pretty damn good trade.
Russia’s doctrine has always placed firepower above survivability; the logic being that you no longer need a navy if you’ve sunk all the enemy’s ships.
I’m talking one carrier group; the combined might of the American Navy would crush Russia’s force.
There’s also rumours that they’ve upgraded its offensive capabilities - replacing its cruise missile launchers with more modern, local-built variants. I’ve even heard that it’s packing DF-21s now, although I doubt that’s true (terrifying as it would be); I don’t see space for launchers that size on the deck.
Propulsion and electrical systems might be breaking down, but the Russian navy still packs a disproportionate amount of firepower. A single Kirov-class carries more ordnance than an entire American carrier group, for starters, and they’re only a few years away from having four of those in service (with a possible…
If you want articles criticising the F-35, search through FA’s archives; it was one of Tyler’s favourite topics.
The Liaoning appears to actually be working pretty well. Oddly, the Chinese knockoff is actually the superior version here.
Not with a cruise missile; American missile tech is massively dated, much more so than Russia’s CIWS tech. A subsonic Tomahawk is basically useless for ship-to-ship actions, and the Harpoon is too short-ranged. Contrast this to things like the SS-N-22 Shipwreck, a Mach 3 freight train loaded up with 1,500 pounds of…
Where the hell’d you hear that? Half my coworkers used to work in bars.
“I deserve to be able to define everything about my country, who gets to live in it and who doesn’t, what its culture is, and who gets a slice of the cake, completely crippling the hopes and dreams of dozens of different minorities in the process, because I don’t think Obama helped me enough!”
I would; I prefer the shape, more or less, and there’s no situation in which I need a hatchback where a sedan wouldn’t suffice.
All they care about is ‘taking the country back’ from some weird alliance that exists in their head between the Republican Party, Wall Street and ethnic/sexual minorities.
