I think you're both right. Though not a myth, this sounds like a case to be tested by The Mythbusters. Seriously though, it sounds like they're both very valid reasons.
In regards to the koozie's: The foam also keeps your hand from direct contact with the can or bottle, thus preventing the heat from transferring from your hand to the drink. That's also why the proper way to hold a wine glass is on the stem.
