I was a bit apprehensive when Mount was first cast because I’d only seen him being a bit of a one tone grump in other things, but he’s absolutely killing it as Pike. I’m really enjoying the performance. He brings the right level of gravitas and humour to the role, plus he just looks like he’s actually enjoying himself.

On a most short haul European routes (so basically all European routes), the only difference between biz and coach is that you’re guaranteed a free seat next to you and get proper crockery rather than plastic. I think rice cookers on the “warm” function keep it too hot for this to be a problem.  It’s the sort of luke warm not hot not cool middle ground that can get problematic sometimes (sometimes being the operative word).

I’m glad it’s not just me!  I really bought into the whole soothing (or at least not disturbing) motion thing and basically it’s all lies and fabrications.  I’d rather take a goddamn North Sea ferry.  But at least now I know for myself, so that’s something.

That sounds lovely! The ones I’ve been on didn’t have anything like a sightseeing car or longer stops. It’s just an overnight way of getting from a to b. Yours sounds much more touristy (in the best way) and pleasant!

The nightjet picks people up throughout the night, so you don’t get so much the side to side gentle wobble of a cruiser as the start and go jolt. I don’t know how it is on the Caledonian though, but glad you had a better experience.

Yeah, like if you want to try for yourself (as I did), then it can be a lark.  But the novelty wears off pretty quickly!

It’s not restful sleep, so you’re definitely not missing out.  The thing is the nightjet picks up passengers overnight, so it’s pretty stop and go.  It’s manageable for one night, but not so restful to want it as a proxy for hotels.
