I think you’re right about them painting themselves into a corner. The competitors know they have to compete for x km, so they train for x km because the point is being able to complete the task at hand better than the rest of the field rather than just being able to go further than everyone else.

Exactly, I have no doubt that the human race isn’t about to totally die out in the next 100 years, but like, it’s going to really suck for whoever drew the short straw.
