It comes down to the time period. By the time of Angela’s tell-all, the first wave of gay liberation had been broken by the AIDS epidemic. Klaus Nomi had died in 1983. Freddie Mercury was already evading the cameras because he was wasting, George Michael, who was gayer than Christmas, was very closeted.

“Inspired” is one way of looking at it. Agitating Bowie into a response is probably a better way of looking at it. I think there’s two separate issues. One is that Angela Bowie never got her due for shouldering the promotion of the Ziggy/Spiders era band, so that David and Mick Ronson could concentrate on the music. That was her work, and it should be acknowledged.
