@andhowever: I'll agree that the MFA programs are incestuous and flawed. I think there are people with cred and platform to say when something sucks - for instance, the reviewers at the New York Review of Books.

Okay, here's my creepiest incident:

@7andfive: So your friend wouldn't identify as Irish American. (Although being born and raised in Ireland, I would think on some level she considers herself Irish.) But would she identify as African American, since she was born and raised in Ireland? That's what people would label her.

@freestylewalker: I was watching Disney and Nick recently with baby-sitting charges. It made me happy that kids are growing up with more diverse casts - hopefully they'll demand it in their teen and adult shows even more loudly than our generation.

@Rosa - que seria de mi?!: That's how I think of it too. But you can bet any Latino who shows up in the media, born in the US or not, will be identified as Latin American. I don't think that should happen.
